“Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Ephesians 5:18
When I was younger I used to think that being filled with the Holy Spirit meant that you had to be one of those crazy people always yelling at church and rolling around on the floor during service. But as I grew older, and matured spiritually, I came to realize that there was so much more to being filled with Holy Spirit—so much!
As I was meditating today, I would like to share what I dwelled on.
You may have heard this verse: On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came as a violent rushing wind.” Acts 2:2
As you may have experienced, the wind is uncontrollable! And so is the Holy Spirit. You cannot plan His moves, can’t control, or command him. Instead, the Holy Spirit controls you. As believers, it’s important to be filled with the Holy Spirit again and again.
When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, the Lord desires to move you in His direction and not yours. You’ll find yourself living the life that God has planned for you.
Once I allowed the Holy Spirit to just move within, I am telling you that it is the greatest feeling ever. Just knowing that He is in control and all you can do is let Him lead you.
I used to be afraid of what people will say if they saw me “get lost in the Spirit” at church, for example. But deep down, I admired those people. Because they were so crazy about God that they did not care who was around. And now, I do not care who is around, when the Holy Spirit wants to move, I allow Him to. No matter where I am.
To be lost in the life and fullness of Jesus…is a way to describe being filled in the Holy Spirit. “The focus is what God does in you and not what you do for God.”
So, how can you be filled with the Holy Spirit?
- Confess yourself to God. He already knows what you’ve done, but he just wants you to confess it. To free yourself. Admit what you have done and humble yourself before Him.
- Surrender yourself to Him. God requires us to give Him all we have and all that we are. All of you is what He wants. Romans 12:1 says “Present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.”
- Pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Just pray and ask Him. It’s that simple. “If we ask anything according to His will, he hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.” 1 John 5:14-15
- Faithfully follow the lead of the Holy Spirit in every part of your life. “The Filling of the Holy Spirit is not a once and for all act, but a continuous ongoing, moment process.”
You will begin to see your life transform when you are filled with Holy Spirit, so don’t be afraid!
Have a good weekend!
